His distinctions include: elected member of the National Academy of Engineering; the Wesley W. Horner Award, American Society of Civil Engineers, 1969; President of the Board of Directors of the Hazardous Waste Action Coalition, 1988; member of the Construction Industry Presidents Forum, 1980-1990; and member of the Advisory Board of the Built Environment, the Commission on Engineering and Technical Systems, National Research Council, 1980.
